Business of the Year

Maritime Door and Window

Maritime Door and Window was founded in 1973 by Ulysse Maillet. At the time, the company started out manufacturing interior doors. Despite fierce competition and hard times in the early 80’s, the company started to slowly increase its product line in order to better serve its customers.

Maritime Door and Window started making exterior doors, followed by windows in 1987. It was in 2001 that the company started manufacturing and commercializing storm doors. In 2004, the company added the production of patio doors to its line of products.

In 1984, Paul Maillet became manager and bought shares in the company. In 1987, Paul and another partner became owners of the company. Eventually, in 1994, Paul Maillet became sole owner of Maritime Door and Window.

First set up in Moncton, Maritime Door and Window spread its activities in the Kent Region by acquiring a storm-door manufacturing plant located in Bouctouche, in 2001. The importance of the Bouctouche plant is undeniable because it exclusively manufactures aluminum doors and storm windows, whereas in Moncton, they mainly produce exterior doors, interior doors, vinyl windows and patio doors.

Over the years, Maritime Door and Window’s plants grew from 2,500 square feet to some 60,000 square feet. The company is also one of the only two businesses in Atlantic Canada that manufacture doors and windows to have an ISO 9001-2000 certificate.

Maritime Door and Window sells its products directly to consumers, contractors and distributors. The company’s customers mainly come from the province’s southeastern region. To date, Maritime Door and Window has some 40 permanent employees and 20 seasonal employees. They handle the manufacturing, assembling and installation aspects of their products and related accessories. In addition, there are about 20 people who hold administrative positions within the organization.

In 2005, Maritime Door and Window received the Business of the Year award by the Conseil économique du Nouveau-Brunswick, for its dynamic and innovative approach within New Brunswick’s French-speaking business community. In the same year, the company also received the Excellence in Business award from the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce.

Maritime Door and Window is also socially involved. It contributes to the food drive for the less fortunate. The company also takes part in the Tree of Hope campaign and contributes to the Excellence Campaign at the Université de Moncton.

Last July 11th, the company was greatly challenged when its door manufacturing plant in Moncton was destroyed by a fire. Despite the disaster that almost burned everything down, the company was able to resume operations during the same week, at temporary locations. The committed employees didn’t even miss a day of work! Before the fire, the Moncton plants were 22,000 square feet. In early 2007, Maritime Door and Window’s new space will be 33,000 square feet.

Maritime Door and Windows takes great pride in its family spirit and the sense of belonging the employees feel for the business. “We have employees with over 27 years of service”, declares Paul. Maritime Door and Window could have closed its doors after the July 11th fire, but the employees were determined that the company would pursue its activities… That’s loyalty!

In order to succeed in business, according to Paul, one must set objectives and go for it. He believes that customer service and manufacturing quality products are equally important to ensure the success of one’s business. Maritime Door and Window’s success therefore lies in hiring the right people and offering outstanding customer service.

When Paul found out that Maritime Door and Window had won the Business of the Year award, he stressed the importance of his team’s hard work. “It’s recognition for the work done by the team and it’s graciously accepted.”

Congratulations to the Business of the Year… Maritime Door and Window!
