Pierrette Robichaud, Rogersville

Pierrette Robichaud was born in Rogersville on rue de l’École, across from the church in the heart of the village. She is the daughter of Alvina and Joe Richard, a well-known sawmill operator. Following her studies at l’École secondaire Assomption, she moved to the United States to find her “pot of gold” in Massachusetts, where she lived for three years. She didn’t make a fortune, but she met her future husband, Jean-Guy, also from Rogersville. After their wedding in 1975, they finally settled in Rogersville.

According to Pierrette, what characterizes Rogersville is that the community is dynamic and hospitable. Her parents were always involved in the community and one day Joe Richard told his children: “I have done my share here in the community. It is now your turn.” Pierrette started getting involved in various organizations: the carnival committee, the sports club, the air cadets, school council activities and youth activities. She also worked as a teacher’s aide for first and second grade students.

In 1988, she was hired as recreation director. She has held this position for twenty years, although her title has changed several times: Responsible for recreational activities, Responsible for recreational activities-tourism and economic development. Since there was no more room on her business card, her title was simplified to Community Development. She is responsible for many projects related to tourism, culture, sports, and recreation, while remaining involved in the arena.

Pierrette does not differentiate between her job and her volunteer work. Her extra hours are also part of volunteerism. Both complement each other. It’s her life. That is how she naturally came to give her time and energy to an abundant number of associations too numerous to mention.

Asked why she does volunteer work, Pierette answered that above all, she does it because she loves it, especially the contacts with other people and with other municipalities. She adds, “I have met exceptional people that I still call today when I need advice». It is also a learning experience. While working with the fire fighters to organize their 50th anniversary, she learned what it is like to be a volunteer fire fighter in a small community.

Among Pierrette’s best experiences was the trip to Prince Edward Island where she accompanied the Rogersville girls’ soccer team in the finals for the Jeux d’Acadie. She discovered a team spirit, cooperation and great friendship between these young girls who still play soccer today and who form a solid team. What she prefers best of all is working in the tourism sector. She learned a lot of historic facts about her community and she tries to pass on her passion and pride to youths on her guided tours.

When asked how she manages to coordinate all her activities Pierrette replied with a smile that it is thanks to her husband. Jean-Guy has always had a lot of patience and understanding and he helped a lot at home and with their two children, Maxine and Iannick. Pierrette adds that her sisters also helped her a lot and her mother always prepared delicious meals. She says that this support has been so precious and that she is grateful to have such a remarkable family.

After all these years, Pierrette does not approach her volunteer or community work in the same manner. One must adapt and change with the times. She also has a lot more experience and one of her greatest challenges is the exodus of young people, mainly in rural communities. It’s one of the things that motivates her into trying to encourage others, mostly youths, to get involved so that it is not always the same people.

Pierrette recently became a grandmother and while continuing to spoil her grandson, she is already thinking of becoming involved, upon her retirement, in projects which she did not have time to dedicate to before because of a lack of time - many cultural projects, as well as the Monument Association.

Even with all these activities, Pierrette finds time to read and do crossword puzzles and her way of relaxing is to cook. She was very surprised to learn of this award especially being able to enjoy it while she is still alive. Her father did not have this chance because he was only recognized after his death.

Joe Richard would be proud of his daughter.
