On June 19,1959, thirty-five salmon fishermen died when they were swept out at sea by waves up to 40 feet near Escuminac wharf. A monument commemorating the wreck has been carved in stone.

The people of Baie-Ste-Anne are very proud of their exceptional prizefighter Yvon Durelle. With pride, they recall the fight at the Montreal Forum on December 10, 1958, where Yvon "Doux" Durelle faced Archie Moore, the world champion. A museum in his honor was inaugurated in August 1994, and with a little luck, Yvon, himself will greet you.
