There was John Walker who later became wealthy and owned a lot of property
in Saint John N.B. including the Post Office and Custom House. On May
1st 1854, John Walker was one of those using trade commerce in the city
of Saint John that incorporated the City’s first Chamber of Commerce.
Others included Alexander Keith, Canada’s wealthiest brewer and John
McMillan who left Richibucto for Australia in the 1840`s and died a
millionaire. He was known internationally as the Worlds greatest sheep
farmer.
Early writers have told us that Richibucto
was really called Richibucto long before the French and English came
here, and the word meant River of Fire. Mitigeg was Richibucto Island
and means popular place. Today, near Mitigeg is the final resting place
of Mary Powell. In a small graveyard, off a muddy road, her tombstone
stands as a lonely memory of those who came to a strange land and founded
Richibucto.
The monument «picture»
is 290 degrees N-N-West of the Richibucto Church. Mary Powell left this
world on the first day of May, 1810. She was 84 years old. She was a
lady.
Mesgig Gossaceli, Richibucto Head, means
big point. Over 400 years ago, when the Europeans first arrived on our
shores, they were met by the Indians who told an ancient tale of a wonderful
ship that had been cast ashore and all aboard her had drowned.
