Before his Australian adventures in the land of the giant hopping mouse; we must look at his effect on Richibucto. In 1837 MacMillan built the largest ship that had been built at that time. In Richibucto, under the direction of Robert F. Smith of Halifax, he constructed a barque called the "Greenock" which had a tonnage of 1350.

MacMillan had an adventurous spirit and sailed with the Greenock who was mastered by Captain Fleck to Liverpool. The "Greenock" was said by many to surpass any built in the Province for fastening and purity of model.
