Dr. Ferguson was also the regional medical officer for the Canadian National Railways. His memory for details enabled cases to be swiftly handled by the Provident Fund Board. His practice in Moncton extended over a period of 37 years, and during that time he gave his life devotedly to his profession, and to the welfare of his patients.

While the patients were his major interest in life, he found great intellectual and spiritual happiness in the companionship of the worlds greatest thinkers and philosophers. He read Greek in the original for the pure joy of it and many quiet evenings were spent with his Bible. His serene personal philosophy and profound Christian faith were reflected in his service to mankind.

His natural affinity was with the brilliant minds and great souls of the world. A life-long friend of Lord Beaverbrook who often visited him here in Richibucto. In the spring of 1935 his health began to fail although he was able to carry on his practice to a limited degree, and was active until a few days before his death, which occurred on October 2nd 1935. After the services, Ferguson`s body was taken to the Railway Depot where it was put on the Ocean Limited for the last ride to Montreal where the body was cremated.

The Ferguson`s were engaged in many careers and pursuits. John Ferguson was Captain’s Clerk aboard the frigate "Savannah". This was one of the fleet, which took possession of San Francisco in 1847. The Spanish influence and control of this California City was over.
