This is the story of a dream; a fantasy of yesterday that became smoky
reality. This epic covers rails, rivers, honeymoons and caskets. An
unusual mixture; but a combination that led to the beginning of the
Kent Northern Railway. John C. Brown and Wilmot Brown were two brothers
who dared to dream and build a better tomorrow. The Browns were a Richibucto
family who had already built the popular summer resort, the Beaches
Hotel «picture». This hotel drew the rich and the famous. One of its most distinguished
guests was the wife of John A. McDonald. It was in front of this hotel,
that Captain Gaudet's thirty foot schooner parted her cable on October
1st 1893 and went ashore high and dry. «picture»
The Browns vision turned to a railway
between Richibucto and Kent Junction a stretch of 27 miles. The vision
became determination and dedication during the summer of 1871. The Browns
hired a crew of men to clear the 27 miles of wilderness.
