Religion has always played a central role
for the residents of Richibucto. The love of God and the respect of
others has been the cornerstone of faith since the early settlers. The
first Jesuit Mission was opened here in Richibucto in 1609. Enock
Wood, an early Methodist preacher was in full swing at the Court House
in 1832.
Two months later, Henry Daniel formed
a church class of 12 members. The first church built in Richibucto was
the Methodist church (on the site now occupied by the St. John Ambulance
then was completed in 1840). In 1843, St. Mary's Anglican church was
construction. This church was vacated in 1963 and torn down in 1967.
The first Anglican Minister, Rev. Meek, soon realized the church was
far too small for the activities.
