Captain Allen Haines gave the land so another small unit could be put
up. Haines, a devoutly religious man, was 19 at the time. This was primarily
used as a Sunday School and during a spell of rough weather in the winter,
this served as the gathering of the flock rather than open the large
St. Mary's Church. The smaller religious center came to be know as the
Chapel of Ease. It was opened in 1852. «picture»
The St. Aloysius Roman Catholic church
was built in 1864. The land was donated by Father John Mooney in 1862.
Father Mooney was the first native born Richibuctonian to become
a Priest.
Until 1881, this church was served by
outside Priest. The first resident Priest was Father E.J. Bannon.
Then came the Presbyterian in 1888. This
is still used today by the United Baptists under the guidance of Pastor
Lorne Stairs. «picture»
In 1964, the new Roman Catholic Church
was fabricated. This was under the eye of Father Everard Belliveau who
came in 1959 after the death of Father Pittman. Belliveau stayed here
until 1972. The new church with sweeping curves of the roof resembling
waves and the tall, tower similar to a lighthouse depict the town's
rich fishing and life by the sea heritage. A monument to man's ability
to overcome the elements. «picture»
